Wheelchair Review - Invacare Fox

Wheelchair type: Class 2

Features: Manual recline, manual fixed-tilt,
My adaptations: Custom back, bariatric seating board, two hand controls (left and right)

Went to London yesterday to see a private specialist and getting around London is where this chair really came into it's own. The streets often failed to have dropped kerbs, the sidewalks were busy with people on their phones. It was cramped and we travelled by bus (Tube coach to be precise) which does not allow much room at all for a wheelchair.

Wheelchair forte's in this context

  • Tiny - even set at the 'stable' fixture.
  • Able to get on the stupidly small space on the back of the Tube bus
  • Tall enough for people to actually notice you - even on their phones!
  • Kerb climber performed excellently!
  • Able to drop backwards of some steep curbs where the curb exceeded 3"
  • Long battery life allows for mistakes and changes of mind

Weaknesses in this context

  • None in this particular context although I would warn against using the smaller setting of 101" in the context of London streets as it might result in a topple if you want to also have the seat high.
My general observations of this chair are that it's quite good for an occasional user but you have to be a good driver. This chair is pretty versatile and you can add your own backrest such as a matrix (I have a Spex backrest as shown), it will take quite a good load on the back. It is NOT suitable for off road at all but with some good driving, it can be used on fairly rough pavements.

The worst point about the Fox: It will slide if not tied down on public transport such as your local bus. It will not go over any ground which has a soft of silt consistency So it can be used on hard mud but if the consistency is at all soft it will just get stuck in.
