Days Viper With Adaptations

Wheelchair Review: Days Viper Elevating Chair.

Wheelchair type: Class 2. Rear Wheel drive

This was probably one of the singularly most comfortable and practical chairs I've ever driven and comfortable to boot! I was struggling with severe back spasms at the time I bought this chair second hand and it's the best feature had to be a pump system in the backrest which meant I could constantly pump up the back for support then release it to relax. Another feature I like about this chair is the fact it's a rear-wheel drive but has a central footplate. A central footplate always looks more stylish - although in fact, it's actually very impractical in some ways. One good thing about a central footplate on a rear-wheel-drive chair is buses!!! The centre footplate reduces the struggle you have getting such an enormous dinosaur on the bus.

Elevating wheelchairs can be very useful if you don't have an adapted kitchen. They can also be useful if you do. However, I feel sceptical about buying elevated chairs second hand now because this chair actually snapped in half - and that was the end of that. It did not snap on the elevation but the fact a chair could snap at all frightened the life out of me!

Storytime: The guy who sold me this chair brought it down by himself in a big wagon even though he was paralysed from the waist down through an accident. He was probably one of the most resourceful and friendly guys I've ever met and I continue to be inspired by him till this day. When he came we asked if he would like to join us at the pub for a meal. He did and it was a lovely experience. So buying second-hand chairs also has social benefits!

Good points:

  • Very stylish looking with its compact base and silver wheels
  • Gorgeous sturdy footplate!
  • Lovely pump-up backrest
  • Excellent smooth driving
  • New style LED controller
  • Elevates
  • Padded armrests - great for people with arm spasms.
Not so good points:

  • Clumpy
  • Slow
  • No lights
  • Did slide off the pavement where we live in the countryside
