Review: Invacare Bora

This is my current wheelchair. This is what I use outdoors. I also have an indoor wheelchair with a similar prescription because I live in the countryside and I was given a very small wheelchair lift.

Here are the plus points from my perspective:

  • Hi can have virtually any seating in this wheelchair
  • You can configure the chair in any way
  • Most of the available seating options are extremely comfortable - even the basic seating
  • The chair can be upgraded, changed in any way
  • It gets on buses
  • It has a surprising turning circle
  • It can get over pretty much any urban based obstacle
  • It can do a bit off road with caution
  • I I've the 3 speed settings, very practical if you change from country to urban settings often or have to get on and off public transport or work in town as you can simply keep the same speed but quickly click a different mode.
  • It's black (I hate grey wheels)

Here are the not so good points:

  •  The chair casters have a stupid and impractical set-up which means they have an 'anti -action '. This is just had design and frankly no amount of good driving can help this issue. I have to have my husband bail me out constantly here
  • The thing is a great urban armchair - but not suitable for off road (which is where I like to be) so I wish I had been able to afford a Kite or Quickie F55 but it didn't work out
I think that's about it.

At the time I owned a set of Alber wheels with off road tyres and I could go anywhere so it didn't bother me. I also got the chair at under a year old second hand for £300 then put parts on it. It came 'empty' from a hospice so I have always imagined some poor guy died in it and they stripped it. I have a good parts dealer who is endlessly patient with my autism and obsession called Endynamics (other dealers have not been able to tolerate me) and I buy parts off Kate from endynamics who are also a bariatric seating specialist.

Anyway, I love my urban armchair and it's very enabling for me.
